Do I need a RIDDOR report for a near-miss gas escape during a service?
Attended a service yesterday and found a pin-hole leak on the primary pipework downstream of the meter — client hadn't noticed any smell (CO detector no alarm). I isolated and repaired. Do I need to RIDDOR report this? It was a near-miss situation. I know RIDDOR is normally for injuries but I've heard gas escapes can count. Anyone dealt with this before?

I had a similar situation two years ago — small escape on a meter bypass. Gas Safe said to document it thoroughly on the job sheet (USSP) and that formal RIDDOR wasn't required for a contained escape with no injury potential, but they do want to know if there's any suspicion of deliberate interference. Call the Gas Safe Engineer Support line on 0800 408 5577.

RIDDOR applies to gas incidents under RIDDOR 2013 Regulation 10 — a dangerous occurrence involving a gas system needs to be reported if it results or could result in death or specified injury. A pin-hole escape repaired without incident is probably borderline but Gas Safe has a dedicated helpline. Ring them, explain the situation, and let them advise. Keep your job sheet regardless.
